White Deer Mountain Lodge
Flour-dusted pine trees from the Val Pusteria forest reach out to the Winter sky as you hover over San Lorenzo di Sebato, Italy, with your helicopter. From the distance you notice a fairytale-like wooden lodge dated from the sixteenth century decorated with little hanging lights that twinkle around the edges of the windows. You begin to land on the private helipad at the White Deer Mountain Lodge and already know that you are a welcomed guest as the Barbini’s greet you from below.
Once settled, Giorgia Barbini offers you a comforting hot chocolate as she explains the story of her best kept treasure, the White Deer Mountain Lodge. This enchanting and unique home is the result of the decision she and her husband, Stefano, took to change their life’s path and the one of their three children. They both previously lived a hectic frenzy lifestyle in the fashion and luxury goods industry. When the corporate strategies of the company where they both worked in changed, the couple decided to make family their number one priority. The lifestyle that embraced this noble hunting lodge from the 1500s became their modus vivendi in 2010, sharing unique and enchanting experiences with their guests ever since.
Stefano gives you a tour through the rooms furnished with unique restored antiques and into the wine cellar, a paradise to the palate’s senses. The vast collection of Tyrolean wines is only a prelude of the gourmet experiences that await you in the next week with the Barbini’s: exclusive cheeses from the mountains nearby, fresh goat milk and elaborated butter (that you will milk and produce yourself in the following days) and porcini mushrooms (that you will learn to find with Stefano’s help). Not only will these natural flavours surprise you. Giorgia’s daily cooking is served as you want it and when you want it, all made from scratch providing warm aromas and textures.
At the sight of the exterior heated pool and SPA with a Finnish sauna and Turkish bath, you decide to take some time off for yourselves. You enjoy the spectacular snowy views from the deep warm pool. As you put on your cozy bathrobe to go back inside, you suddenly know why White Deer Mountain Lodge has won Italy’s Best Ski Chalet at the World Ski Awards in 2013, 2014 and 2015: every detail is carefully taken care of, including the heating of your robe for your comfort in this Winter pool bathing experience. The lodge includes all of the tasteful indulgences for an unforgettable experience without forgetting that they are run on a sustainable energy concept.
After grooming up, you savor Giorgia’s exquisite Italian meal elaborated keeping in mind your particular food preferences. Everything is beyond perfect. The lit fireplace and the peaceful surrounding creates a tranquil and unforgettable atmosphere for the end of your first day at the White Deer Mountain Lodge.
A family-friendly alpine chalet
White Deer Mountain Lodge is an alpine chalet run privately by their owners, Barbini family, where concepts such as friendship, privacy and authenticity are part of their values. Families with kids are welcome to this alpine chalet where they can be comfortably lodged in the two floors of the building. The inside, carefully disposed, offers bunk beds especially designed for families with kids. At White Deer a world of unique and traditional experiences is available for you and your family. The youngest ones can practice rural activities under the guidance of Giorgia and Stefano who will teach them how to milk goats or elaborate butter. Adults can learn Giorgia’s master cooking recipes or practice the art of wood sculpting with Stefano. According to the season of the year, you can join the couple on their quest for mushrooms and berries in the forest or collect wood for the fireplace.
1500 Tyrolean bottle wine cellar
If you’re a wine lover, White Deer Mountain Lodge has a paradise for your senses with over 1500 Tyrolean wines. The cellar is an eccentric area of the lodge where you can discover every particularity of its wine varieties. Also, during spring-summer seasons guided visits and tastings at South Tyrol's best wineries and cheese producers are offered.
The lodge offers breathtaking views to the Alpine scenery where the Tre Cime di Lavaredo stand out along three distinctive battlement-like merlon-shaped peaks that were declared World National Heritage by UNESCO in 2009. They are probably one of the best-known mountain groups in the italian Alps. From four of the bedrooms and the heated outdoor pool, you can enjoy privileged panoramic views of the Dolomites while taking a relaxing dip.
Golf at 1200 m altitude
Since 2012, White Deer Mountain Lodge has its own 18-hole golf course designed by the prestigious American architect, Ron Kirby, and designer Paolo Gueltrini from Ravenna. As a guest, you have access to this golf course at an altitude of 1200 m to enjoy your very own game.
Located in the Dolomite region of the Eastern Alps, the White Deer Mountain Lodge was built in the XVI century as a hunting fortress for the landlords of the area. Its architectural value stands out due to its characteristic features: the vaulted ceiling at the entrance hall, a stone staircase, intarsia work, Gothic spruce doors, a ground floor built from river stones and a barrel vault covering the kitchen.
In the 2006, Giorgia and Stefano, the chalet owners, assumed the responsibility of managing this culturally historic building. During the reform handiwork, they found a midpoint between tradition and innovation following a sustainability model. During these improvement works, done with the support of local artisans, natural products from the area (like wood and quartzite stones) were used. It was reopened during December 2009, offering families a mountain retreat for their holidays.
This 5,920 ft2 alpine chalet, has a capacity to accommodate up to ten people. The 2,012 ft2 ground floor features the kitchen, dining room, Tea room and small room with a bathroom. On the 2,067 ft2 first floor there are four rooms, a living room and dining room. One of the rooms has two bunk beds that are suitable for kids or young people. All rooms have an ensuite bathroom with a bathtub.
The exterior areas and the garden offer 2,4 acres of trees and alpine pastures. In the garden, you will find a swimming pool and a small golf field that offers unbeatable views to the small town of Brunico.
The last chalet area, the relaxation area, will offer you a wellness space for you and your family. In 646 ft2, you will find a wide variety of spa areas: a 180 x 180cm jacuzzi for 4 people, rain shower, sauna and chromotherapy. There is also a bithermal shower with three different programs: cold water, tropical rain forest and blue ocean. This is without doubt the best way to end the day.
